CherryPal Announces 7-inch Android 2.1 Tablet for $188

While the world of high-end (and therefore high-priced) Android tablets is on the verge of popping off, it’s good to see there are still a few companies devoted to the low-end, dirty and cheap slates using Google’s OS. The CherryPad America is a 7-inch, Android 2.1 tablet made on the cheap to provide consumers with an affordable device to smudge up on the go. Specs include a resistive touchscreen at 800×480 resolution, an ARM11 CPU clocked at 800MHz, 256MB RAM, and 2GB of internal storage.

The press announcement claims there are plans to bump the device up to Android 2.2, but we will believe that when we see it. Cherrypal CEO admits the CherryPad America is no iPad killer, but it still comes in at the killer price of $188.

GetJar’s announcing free availability of all of the games housed on their third-party applications marketplace. Millions of games and apps have been made free thanks to a “revolutionary” business model GetJar’s starting to employ as they profess it’ll change the way apps and games for mobile devices are priced forever. Of course, those Millions of games and apps aren’t all for Android, but there are a few free Android games now available – most notably from Glu – to get you started.

GetJar_logo_with_shadow

One of the biggest standouts is Super KO Boxing 2 that would normally put you out $3 if you download straight from the Android market. I haven’t taken a look around to see what else I could snap up for the low cost of nothing, but be sure to head on over to GetJar to check out their selection now. Press details straight ahead.

San Mateo, CA – October 5, 2010 – GetJar, (www.getjar.com), the world’s second largest app store, today announced that it has launched a pilot program through a partnership with Glu Mobile (NASD: GLUU), a leading global publisher of mobile games, that provides consumers with free premium games exclusively at GetJar.com. During the initial phase of this innovative program, GetJar+ makes premium paid content available for free with no ad insertions, registrations, or any other catches. The very same games one would pay for at other app stores will be available on GetJar for FREE for a limited two-week period to consumers all over the world.

How can GetJar afford to give away games for free?

GetJar is able to do this because of its size as the number two app store in the world with over 1 billion downloads to date across 200 countries which generates nearly 100million downloads/month. Only this level of scale can allow this new model to work – it’s the cinema versus a TV network or a music store versus a radio station. GetJar is the TV network or the radio station that doesn’t have to rely on making consumers paying for the ticket or CD. GetJar doesn’t need to rely on the revenue from the sale of apps – instead it relies on the sponsored app placements on its site, which allows it to then buy premium content from publishers and distribute this content to consumers for free.

“This revolutionary new business model will fundamentally change the app industry economics and give consumers access to many more apps at a lower cost or in GetJar’s case – free,” said Ilja Laurs, founder and CEO for GetJar. “Everyone benefits — consumers can download all applications for free and get access to unique content regardless of the phone model they use, and now with GetJar+, millions of consumers get exclusive access to content that would normally require payment to download. Developers and publishers benefit by being paid for the licensing of their content on a global app store with huge scale. We’re thrilled that Glu is the first games publisher to realize the benefits of this new monetization model as well as the opportunity to reach consumers globally across more than 2,300 different handsets.”

“We’re excited to partner with GetJar on GetJar+,” said Olivier Bernard, Managing Director of Glu EMEA and APAC. “GetJar’s global scale and consumer base allows us to reach an entirely new audience of game-hungry consumers who ordinarily might not be able to buy premium games while also extending the life cycle of our own products through the use of a large and growing distribution channel.”

Where can I get these popular games for free?

Initially, these free premium games will be found on GetJar.com’s homepage in the “Recommended” section and includes some of Glu’s most successful licensed and original IP such as: Brain Genius 2, Stranded: Mysteries of Time, Build-a-lot, and Race Driver Grid.

The games will be available across several major mobile platforms including Android, Blackberry and Java.

Holy hot Androids, a lengthy list of upcoming Verizon devices has leaked and it looks like we are in for a whole heap of Android over the next 6 months. The list reveals a total of six new Android devices to be hitting Big Red and doesn’t skimp on the details. It looks like Motorola will continue to pound the competition with two new handsets and their oft-rumored Stingray tablet while HTC, Samsung, and LG with what could be it’s first worthy Android round out the list. Read on for a breakdown of the devices in question:

Samsung SCH-i400 Continuum: This is the handset we just got a look at this morning and is lined up for a late October release. The phone features a 1GHz processor and two OLED screens.

Motorola Venus: This handset is said to be similar in design to the Motorola Charm and due out in October, featuring a Blackberry stile keyboard perched just below its touchscreen. Unlike the Charm, the Venus will feature a 1GHz processor, CDMA and Gsm/HSPA radios, and Android 2.2.

Motorola Droid Pro: Given that the Droid 2 World Edition shows up nowhere on this list, we are still inclined to believe that the Droid Pro will be an upgraded version of the handset when it hits shelves in late October/early November. It should feature a processor clocked to 1.3GHz, Froyo, and global radios. It is also rumored to replace the Droid 2 outright once it hits shelves.

HTC Merge/Lexikon/Lexicon: Call it what you will, but anyway you slice it this handset that goes by three names for the time being will feature a slide-out QWERTY keyboard with global radios and a 1GHz Snapdragon inside. Expect it in stores come late October/early November.

LG enV Pro: LG hasn’t quite hit one out of the park with Android yet, but this could be just the ticket. Maintaining the form factor of the LG Voyager/enV Touch series of phones, the handset features a 1GHz processor and a global radio.

Motorola Stingray tablet: This is the tablet we have been hearing so much about lately and it’s still pegged for a Q1 2011 release. Specs revealed include a 10-inch screen, Android 3.0 Gingerbread, 16GB of on-board storage, and the super popular NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset. The tablet is said to be launching with CDMA inside, but much to our delight is said to be “hardware upgradeable to LTE.” How exactly one will upgrade to LTE remains to be seen.

So there you have it. Six new devices to speculate and salivate over. Something about the fact that there is no device on this list that could be dubbed “low-end” gets me a little giddy. Oh, Motorola Droid you have served me well but one of the above handsets might just have to take your place. HTC Merge and enV Pro I’m looking at you. Which do you guys want?

If you’re on the East Coast you may have noticed the torrential downpours and monsoon-like winds running rampant around the area, but fans still turned out en masse to be the first to own the limited Motorola Droid 2 Empire Strikes Back Edition (I too braved the weather to get my hands on the Droid everyone was looking for, but more on that later).

The phone is available online and at select stores around the country. For a list of where you can snatch up a handset (if they aren’t already sold out) check out this post from yesterday. You can read up on the handset through the press release below.
