Who would have thought that geohot aka George Hotz, the teen who was the first to unlock the iPhone would stir so much passion that he would inspire a fan-made movie? It’s actually quite a decent production, considering it’s amateur work. Known as “The Official Geohot Movie Trailer”, this video celebrates the hacker’s achievements over the past years, both in jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone.

Considering the huge box office success of the movie The Social Network, a real movie made for this story would probably cash in as well.

Empty Your Magazines: iPad App Bug Lets You Download Periodicals For Free

Condè Nast are scrambling to plug a hole in their iPad magazine-subscription apps that let users download their publications (including Wired and The New Yorker) for free. An Italian hacking group known as Dark Apples took credit for the exploit, which they tested on similar newspaper apps in their home country: All a moderately-skilled iPad user has to do is connect the iPad to his laptop, search inside the iPad files with a common managing software (we used iPhone Explorer), copy the .plist file that manage the download information and correct a single field. This boils down to changing a single word: Where it says “purchasable” you write “viewable” instead, and copy back the file on the iPad

All a moderately-skilled iPad user has to do is connect the iPad to his laptop, search inside the iPad files with a common managing software (we used iPhone Explorer), copy the .plist file that manage the download information and correct a single field. This boils down to changing a single word: Where it says “purchasable” you write “viewable” instead, and copy back the file on the iPad. Now all you need to do is click on “delete” the magazine issue on the iPad app and a “download” button will appear instead of the “buy” button. It means you can download the magazine for free.

(Kids, DON’T try this at home!)

Turns out Adobe is at the center of the controversy: the software tools they provided to Condè Nast also contain the software flaw.  Adobe promised a software fix to their Digital Content Viewer, which the publications were scheduled to receive on October 8.  To date, the bug has not been fixed, but that doesn’t mean a software upgrade at the user end isn’t imminent.

We normally see eligibility open up for those adding a line to their T-Mobile plans through Amazon, but that doesn’t seem to be the case this time around. Ah well, this is the best deal you’re going to get on the phone if you’ve been shopping around for a new carrier. Head on over there now to begin.

It IS Brain Surgery: An Unlock For iOS 4.2 Is Coming!

The Dev Team/geohot smackdown over bragging rights to jailbreaking iOS 4.1 just got leapfrogged by a self-described “Neurosurgeon & iPhone Baseband hacker.” Sherif Hashim announced on Twitter that he has busted not one, but two key basebands (05.14.02 and 2.10.04) — which means he can unlock not only iOS 4.1, but the yet-to-be-released iOS 4.2.  The key Tweets are:   Again, these exploits probably won’t hit the streets until 4.2 does.  On the other hand, it may give home jailbreakers pause, especially those contemplating having a go with geohot’s limera1n, which breaks but does not unlock.

In any event, the hacking community has been put on notice: there’s a (wait for it!) new “Sherif” in town.

It Ain’t Easy Being Green: Dev Team, GeoHot Go To The Mattresses Over iOS 4 Jailbreak

So today (October 10, 2010) was SUPPOSED to be the day that the Dev Team would release GreenPois0n , their SNEAKERS -like iOS4 jailbreak exploit that was resistant to any Apple fixes short of a complete hardware upgrade. (And just WHY did they choose today to Pois0n the iDevice world?  Well, you’ve probably heard the 2012 conspirators mumbling about the significance of 10/10/10 — but for old computer hackers and/or sci-fi nerds, 101010 is the hexadecimal representation of 42

So today (October 10, 2010) was SUPPOSED to be the day that the Dev Team would release GreenPois0n, their SNEAKERS-like iOS4 jailbreak exploit that was resistant to any Apple fixes short of a complete hardware upgrade.

(And just WHY did they choose today to Pois0n the iDevice world?  Well, you’ve probably heard the 2012 conspirators mumbling about the significance of 10/10/10 — but for old computer hackers and/or sci-fi nerds, 101010 is the hexadecimal representation of 42. Which (as any reader of THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY can tell you), is the answer to life, the universe, and everything!

Well, the Pineapple boys did say the release date was tentative (or in pro-wrestling terms, “Card Subject To Change”), and lo and behold 10/10/10 will come and go with no GreenPois0n.  How come?

Turns out George “geohot” Hotz — the rival iPhone hacker most recently known for trying (and failing) to jailbreak the PlayStation 3 — released his own exploit, “limera1n,” which uses the same SHAtter exploit as GreenPois0n but promises to work on both iOS 4.0 and 4.1.  The Dev-Team promptly cried foul, claiming that Hotz had been given SHAtter with the express understanding he wouldn’t release limera1n first.  So Dev Team reluctantly postponed the GreenPois0n release until they could successfully merge geohot’s code with their own.

If G4 television ever created a soap opera for and based on the computer geek community, this is what it might look like…

Geohot vs the Chronic Dev-Team the Jailbreak Drama Unfolds

Posted on 10th October 2010 by admin in , fm, green, hack, hd, hp, iphone, ipod touch, phone, us | Tags: , , , , ,

It’s on. Chronic Dev-Team’s GreenPois0n jailbreak, which was due to be released tomorrow, has been pushed back. This announcement comes after news that hacker Geohot (known for his PlayStation 3 and iPhone jailbreaks), released limera1n, which is said to jb 4.0 and 4.1 across the iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad, iPod Touch 4G and iPod Touch 3G

It’s on. Chronic Dev-Team’s GreenPois0n jailbreak, which was due to be released tomorrow, has been pushed back. This announcement comes after news that hacker Geohot (known for his PlayStation 3 and iPhone jailbreaks), released limera1n, which is said to jb 4.0 and 4.1 across the iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad, iPod Touch 4G and iPod Touch 3G. The kicker?

Geohot was provided the code for SHAtter under the understanding that he would not release his tool using his limera1n exploit. Turns out, he went ahead with it anyway.

SHAtter is now being held back as GreenPois0n is being worked on to retool their jailbreak to use Geohot’s exploit:

This is to keep from exposing two exploits at once. However, we have read that limera1n causes problems, and isn’t quite up to par, even on devices that it’s compatible with.

The Dev-Team says, “cleaning the mess he [Geohot] made.”

As the iPhone Dev-Team’s Muscle Nerd says, this is not the worst possible scenario, adding that “SHAtter may even be improved”:

Still, it seems that Geohot is catching some heat:

Screen shot 2010-10-09 at 10.13.27 PM

Still, in the end it seems that things got sorted out as Comex, who wrote some of the implementation code and shared it with Geohot, Tweeted the following:

(Link)

Currently, Geohot’s jailbreak has been reported as buggy, but he has been continually improving on it since the initial release. We wouldn’t recommend it yet, not until we know that compatibilities and bugs have been fixed. In addition, it is currently Windows-only (as of the time of this writing) with a Mac and Linux version on the way. Still, we aren’t running a tutorial yet.

What Geohot has effectively done, however, aside from releasing his jailbreak first and beating them by a day, he has forced them to hold back their release until they can retool it.

This is all sort of a testament to both approaches; Dev-team takes a more conservative approach, they find hacks and hold them to give them a longer shelf life. Geohot, on the other hand, is more along the lines of “this is what we do, we hack, so release the hacks” and the truth is that both approaches have their good sides. Dev-team’s take is more about community and long-term support for their tools.

T-Mobile Confirms G2 Engineered to Allow Only Temporary Root

Earlier this week the T-Mobile G2 was rooted , but much to the surprise of many any modifications would only take hold until the handset was restarted. This created quite the stir in the root community, especially after recent releases from Motorola contained security features such as locked bootloaders to make the devices especially hard to crack.

Earlier this week the T-Mobile G2 was rooted, but much to the surprise of many any modifications would only take hold until the handset was restarted. This created quite the stir in the root community, especially after recent releases from Motorola contained security features such as locked bootloaders to make the devices especially hard to crack. It left many wondering if perhaps it was simply an issue with the method of rooting, but many feared the reason was a bit more sinister. Turns out they were right. The T-Mobile G2 was designed to only allow temporary rooting. Read T-Mobile’s take:

“As pioneers in Android-powered mobile devices, T-Mobile and HTC strive to support innovation. The T-Mobile G2 is a powerful and highly customizable Android-powered smartphone, which customers can personalize and make their own, from the look of their home screen to adding their favorite applications and more.

The HTC software implementation on the G2 stores some components in read-only memory as a security measure to prevent key operating system software from becoming corrupted and rendering the device inoperable. There is a small subset of highly technical users who may want to modify and re-engineer their devices at the code level, known as “rooting,” but a side effect of HTC’s security measure is that these modifications are temporary and cannot be saved to permanent memory. As a result the original code is restored.”

Now I’m no expert on Android hacking, so I can’t say for sure whether or not a workaround will be found to deal with the security measure put in place by HTC. If previous work by members of the Android hacking community are any indication, I’m hopeful one will be found. If not, it looks like the days of truly open Android phones are numbered. Quite the shame.

(Welcome to the “10-Spot…”)  Keep in mind the “E” in “ETA” does stand for “estimated.”

The update appears to be centered around @pod2g’s bootrom exploit that’s immune to software patches or even reflashed/patched bootroms, and will work on iPads, iPods, and iPhones.  So this will be not only the first iOS 4.1 jailbreak, it’s the one that Apple can’t fix without a major hardware overhaul.  Coupled with the fact that jailbreaking is now considered legal, there is now almost no reason NOT to jailbreak your iDevice.  (Don’t believe us?  Refresh your memory with our “Reasons to Jailbreak” article.)

Talk about opening the door and throwing away the key!  October 10th can’t come fast enough.
