The Square application is now available for the iPhone and Android , looking to redefine how businesses can accept payment for goods. Square is all about the receipt.

Square is all about the receipt. Most small businesses make a combination of cash and card sales. With traditional paper receipts cash sales are anonymous. Square’s electronic receipts let you capture and track more vital information about each sale, including location and an itemized purchase list, and also include a photo and link to your website on the customer’s receipt.

As reviewed on IntoMobile:

quotemarksright.jpg The system involves a small dongle that plugs into the headphone jack of the iPhone or iPod Touchand this is used to swipe acredit card. The app then securely sends the information over the air and the end user has to sign the device with their finger to complete the transaction. A receipt (with optional geotagging) is then sent to the customer via e-mail or SMS and funds are withdrawn like normal.quotesmarksleft.jpg

Preparing for the Next Haiti, with Maps, Texts and Tweets

In the weeks following the January 12 earthquake, the relief effort in Haiti relied in part on crowdsourcing: an army of volunteers in the United States and elsewhere helped sift through emergency text messages, translated them and send them on to first responders on the scene.

quotemarksright.jpg In the weeks following the January 12 earthquake, the relief effort in Haiti relied in part on crowdsourcing: an army of volunteers in the United States and elsewhere helped sift through emergency text messages, translated them and send them on to first responders on the scene.

According to Rob Munro, a graduate fellow at Stanford who works with the nonprofit Energy for Opportunity, about 40,000 useful text messages came through the system in the first six weeks, meaning that thousands of Haitians received timely requests for food, water or medical help.

But the high-tech Haiti volunteer response also depended in large part on personal connections, and the mobilization of the Haitian diaspora in North America, for it to work. Now development agencies, relief workers and even the U.S. government are looking at ways to reproduce the experiment in the next emergency. quotesmarksleft.jpg

This is the app for anyone with a backlog of video on their computer and a minimum of time or interest in converting it to Apple proprietary video format.

This app allows you to stream video from your computer over your wifi. It converts it on the fly to a format the iPad will play.

Some of the features include:

Support for all major formats and codecs are supported; mp4, m4v, mov, avi, wmv, asf, mpg, mpeg, mkv, 3gp, dmf, divx, flv.

DRM protected videos as well as proprietary codecs are NOT supported. It won’t play video from iTunes, but you’re on an Apple device, so this shouldn’t be a worry.

Live conversion lets you play videos without having to convert them before.

Requires iPhone or iPod touch with firmware 3.0 or newer and sufficiently powerful computer.

Option to convert entire video before playing it, offline conversion. Files converted offline can be put to conversion queue.

Adjust quality, zoom and resolution for each video individually

Select audio stream (language)

Works over local network and over internet; including 3G, though labeled ‘experimental’. We’ll find out for sure how that works when the iPad 3G comes out.

We’ve been waiting for an app like this and would love to have something similar for the Apple TV. The app is slick and professional, and like the best of Apple products, it just works.

Also available for the iPhone app.

Four out of five stars.

Apple "HD" Apps are iPad Only [Apps]

Posted on 25th March 2010 by admin in , apple, hd, iphone, ipod touch, phone, tablet, us | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Kotaku noted earlier today that HD versions of several popular App Store games have started popping up in iTunes. We just heard from a developer that it’s Apple’s preferred nomenclature for distinguishing iPad games that aren’t iPhone or iPod compatible

It’s just a concept, but think about it: Why should we put up with the tyranny of standing—on both legs, manually—while being carried across sidewalks? Why, when we could sit on one like a pony . [ Atcrux via Jalopnik ] More »

22Moo’s GameBone Gets a New Look

22Moo’s GameBone Pro was announced last year as a controller that could be used for iPhone games.

GameBone960

22Moo’s GameBone Pro was announced last year as a controller that could be used for iPhone games. It was literally shaped like a toy dog bone, and failed to receive the attention it needed from the media.

Fast-forward to March 2010, and 22Moo is at it again, with a new render of their iPhone control pad. This time with a much more streamlined device that actually fits your iPhone or iPod Touch into the controller shell. iSmashPhone has already seen creations such as the Zeemote which added new control methods to Blackberry smartphones, but the iPhone seemed to fully rely on its touchscreen to emulate buttons, which aren’t always ideal for certain game types. That has changed now, maybe…

The bad news is that developers must create compatibility for the controller. This means that current games will likely not work without an update, and future games will have to be made with the device in mind for it to work. Otherwise, it’s just a cute iPhone case with buttons.

The GameBone is currently set for a Q4 2010 release with no exact date mentioned.

The following text is from the manufacturer’s website:

22Moo’s GameBone is one of the world’s first iPad, iPod touch and iPhone compatible 8-way D-pad 6 buttons gamepad to incorporate a 2000mAh battery and Apple’s 30-pin dock connector connectivity, built-in speakers, mic and 3.5 audio headphone jack.

The GameBone features :

• Styling to compliment iPod/iPhone with optimized design for ergonomics and comfort
• 2000mAh Lithium-ion Battery for additional power for your iPod touch / iPhone*
• LED showing charging state and capacity
• 8-way D-Pad with 6 buttons
• Built-in Stereo speakers
• Highly sensitive omni directional Mic
• 3.5mm audio headphone jack
• Apple authentication IC + “Made for iPod” and “Works for iPhone” certification**
