Going all the way back to the initial release of Skype for Verizon phones, the app was locked to use over 3G only. Up until a recent update, you couldn’t even launch the application if Wi-Fi was enabled on your device. Going all the way back to the initial release of Skype for Verizon phones, the app was locked to use over 3G only. Up until a recent update, you couldn’t even launch the application if Wi-Fi was enabled on your device. Somewhat ironically, when Skype finally saw a public release for all Android handsets regardless of carrier the complete opposite happened — the device was locked to calls over Wi-Fi only. Now thanks to user xeudoxus over at DroidFoums, the Skype APK has been hacked to allow for use over both Wi-Fi and 3G, and you can install it now.
Download: Skype3G.zip
- Uninstall any instance of Skype currently on your handset.
- Download the zip file above and extract the .apk.
- Move the .apk to your MicroSD card.
- Install the .apk using a file manager (such as Astro).
- Make 3G calls ’til the cows come home.

Most should be familiar with fring for Android, and most should also have heard by now that Skype just released their app for all Android 2.1 and higher devices. So not to be outdone in the world of VoIP, fring has flung back with fringOut, their own low-cost calling service that will be packaged into the latest versions of the app. Yes, fring already offers free video and standard calling and chat between users, but now for as low as one cent per minute users can dial any number they want. You can learn more about the service on the blog post announcing it over at fring’s site, or simply download the latest version of the app from the Android Market to start fringin’ away.

It seems unfathomable that Skype didn’t have an app for Android until now*, but it’s true. Phones running Android 2.1 or 2.2 can download the free app now, for free Skype-to-Skype calls, IM and more.
